My grandfather, Pietro Genovese, was in Sao Paulo, Brazil from approximately 1893-1899. He was there with his stepfather Giuseppe Nicola DiSanto. They built a church. According to what I have been told, a priest in Abruzzi raised the money in Italy to build the church. (The Italian immigrants there had no churches).
My grandfather returned to Italy in 1899 and then emigrated here to the US in 1905 (to Philadelphia).
